Choosing the Right Spanish Learning Path in Middle School at Tampa Bay International School

Families searching for bilingual education in Clearwater, Florida often want a program that supports students at different levels of language development while maintaining strong academics. At Tampa Bay International School, our middle school program (grades 5–8) offers two language pathways designed to help students build meaningful Spanish skills while continuing to grow academically.

By offering both a Spanish Immersion Track and a Spanish Proficiency Track, we ensure that students can enter our program at the level that best supports their success on the path toward bilingualism.

Spanish Immersion Track

Our Spanish Immersion Track is designed for students who already demonstrate intermediate Spanish proficiency and are ready to strengthen their bilingual skills through immersive learning.

In this program, 50% of classroom instruction is delivered in Spanish, including core academic subjects such as science and math. Learning content through Spanish allows students to deepen their vocabulary, critical thinking, and communication skills simultaneously.

Students in this track benefit from:

  • Advanced bilingual education experiences

  • Academic instruction in both English and Spanish

  • Increased confidence speaking and writing in Spanish

  • Opportunities to develop biliteracy and cultural awareness

The goal of the Spanish Immersion Track is for students to achieve advanced levels of bilingualism and biliteracy by the time they enter high school. This strong foundation prepares students for advanced language studies and global opportunities in the future.

Spanish Proficiency Track

The Spanish Proficiency Track is designed for students who are newer to the language or who have limited Spanish experience but want to build strong language skills.

Students in this pathway take focused courses that develop their Spanish reading, writing, and speaking abilities. At the same time, core academic subjects such as science and math are taught in English, ensuring students remain confident and successful in their academic studies while strengthening their language skills.

This track helps students:

  • Build a strong foundation in Spanish

  • Develop practical communication skills

  • Grow their confidence in learning a second language

  • Work toward future bilingual and biliteracy goals

Over time, students gain the language skills necessary to continue advancing in their Spanish studies and move closer to achieving bilingual proficiency.
